What is a DO?
Many people are not aware there are two types of complete medical physicians in the United States - DO's and MD's. They are both alike in many ways; each can prescribe medicine and perform surgery. Both complete 4 years of medical school after which they both complete internships, residencies and fellowships. Both DOs and MDs can choose to practice in any specialty of medicine-such as family practice, cardiology, psychiatry, surgery or ophthalmology. Together, DOs and MDs enhance the state of health care available in the U.S. It is the ways that DOs and MDs are different that can bring an extra dimension to your health care.
Why choose an Osteopathic Physician?
In addition to all the prescribing and medical knowledge of a regular physician, osteopathic physicians can incorporate hands-on manipulative treatment called osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). OMT uses a full evaluation of the patient's structural anatomy in order to come up with a proper treatment plan. OMT is a natural, gentle, painless and non-invasive way of treating many pain conditions as well as other problems. Therefore, an osteopathic physician can work in conjunction to complement your current therapy and when appropriate, replace the use of medications or surgery. At times, osteopathic physicians can have success when traditional treatments have failed.
What can be treated with Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT)?
Many people can benefit from Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT). Osteopathic physicians providing OMT can complement your current therapies and when appropriate, reduce or replace drugs or surgery. Most patients come in for treatment of pain they have been unable to remedy by other treatments. OMT is also great for athletes, as it can improve athletic performance and stamina by helping the body function more efficiently. OMT can also be used to treat a wide spectrum of problems, including but not limited to:
  • Neck and Back Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Vertigo

What is the difference between Acupuncture and Medical Acupuncture?
Although both are very similar and rooted from the same ancient medicine, the difference between them is the person performing the procedure. In medical Acupuncture a licensed physician who has undergone additional acupuncture training is administering the treatment. Furthermore, a physician is able to supplement your acupuncture with more traditional western medicine as needed.
